The San Francisco 49ers will face an AFC West opponent for a second consecutive week as they square off against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night. This week’s clash between the Niners and Chiefs is scheduled for an 8:00pm ET start at Arrowhead Stadium. The latest 2013 NFL Preseason Odds have the exhibition contest lined as a Pick’em; however, the Chiefs are drawing -125 odds ($125 wins $100) to the 49ers +105 ($100 wins $105). The total in Friday’s game is set at 40 points.

Although it is the preseason, some part of Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith probably wants to stick it to San Francisco and his former coach Jim Harbaugh. Smith has not talked too openly about it, but it is no secret he was displeased that an injury led to his demotion in San Francisco. That could serve him well this week; however, the possibility also exists that his emotions may do him more harm than good.

Smith had no such tensions last week and he looked as good as ever, completing seven of eight passes for 68 yards in a 13-17 loss to the Saints. The Chiefs capped off their Smith led opening drive with a one yard Jamaal Charles touchdown run.

While Kansas City’s starters are scheduled to see more time this week, Charles will not. The Pro Bowl running back injured his foot in Monday’s practice and will probably sit out Friday’s game. Charles rushed for 13 yards on five carries in KC’s preseason opener; he also caught three passes for 27 yards.

San Francisco dropped its first preseason game as well, losing 10-6 to the Broncos at Candlestick Park. As the score would indicate, both teams struggled offensively, combining for a meager 31 first downs and 496 yards. Nonetheless, Colin Kaepernick showed well in his limited reps, completing 4-of-4 passes for 38 yards.

The loss served as Harbaugh’s fourth in nine preseason games. The Under cashed for the sixth time in those nine games, though.
